Clearing a Locked Handheld
This has come up often enough that I've decided to include brief instructions here...
The most common situation is that the operator or night manager has stumbled across one of the bugs that locks the SmartBar program.
Common causes are a communication failure caused by, for example, a cable falling out of the fridge or the handheld. If you've seen an error message regarding the LEFT() function the software will almost certainly be locked.
These instructions are for Pocket PC Version 3.0 on an iPAQ 3760. Other software versions may vary slightly.
If you can't see items at the bottom of the screen because the keyboard is in the way, tap the keyboard icon at bottom right to minimise it.
- Tap on the bar at the top to get the "Start" menu
- Tap on "Settings"
- At the bottom of the Setting screen, select the "System" tab
- Tap the "Memory" icon
- Select the "Running Programs" tab at the bottom of the screen
- Tap the "Stop All" button
- You'll probably get an error message about the SmartBar CE program not responding — this is the root cause of the problem
- Answer the question to make the program go away
- Close the "Settings" screens by tapping on the 'X' at top right a few times
- Restart the SmartBar program and try the operation again
